Fitness Blogging for Winter

I don't know how many gyms have used this phrase in their advertising, but just because it isn't original doesn't make it irrelevant: Summer bodies are built in winter. Before COVID, this was a much less complicated concept. Lots of people join gyms during winter than at any other time, particularly right after the holidays.

What this means is that content about fitness is also likely to draw a bigger audience when you launch or aggressively promote a fitness blog during winter. That being the case, it’s time to start thinking seriously about fitness blogging and any related health care content marketing efforts you might be organizing now.

Today, I’m going to focus on blogging and the various subject areas that have historically gotten good play in winter, augmented with ideas that lend well to fitness during a pandemic. People are starting to relax their social distancing behaviors, but many are still rightly concerned about just walking into harm’s way. After all, there’s a lot of respiration going on at the gym. I do, however, think that if your niche is gym members, you’ll have plenty to fill your blog, even in the existing health climate.

Here are some of my ideas for winter fitness blogging that I hope will help you start brainstorming some good ideas.

Gym Memberships and Gym Safety

Let’s start here since I already brought it up. This is the time of year that people are thinking the most about joining a gym. If you run a gym or you are in an affiliate marketing program that pays you to motivate people to join one, this section is for you.

Content that centers on gym-based workouts can motivate people to join or go back to the gym. Keep the emphasis on the benefits of actually working out in an atmosphere where help and support are available. People new to the gym experience will likely find this kind of content helpful.

You can also review gyms and gym chains and let people decide which ones are best suited to their fitness goals. Think in terms of topics like:

X Reasons to Join a Gym

X Reasons to Work With a Personal Trainer

X Vital Services You Should Look for in a Gym

Circuit Fitness Training – Developing Your Ideal Workout

…and so on. You get the idea. Zero in on topics that necessitate joining and going to a gym. Also, seed your content with advice and commentary about staying safe during the pandemic. Encourage wiping down equipment more thoroughly and vetting gyms for good cleaning and sterilization practices, for starters. Promote personal safety on all levels, from the proper use of the equipment to preventing the spread of COVID.

Outdoor Fitness

For those who don’t like the idea of being around all those respiratory droplets, there’s always outdoor fitness – literally always, even in winter. Outdoor sports and fitness activities abound, and you should be blogging about them. Here are a few content areas you may or may not have already considered:

Walking and hiking – Whether it’s around the neighborhood or off the beaten path, walking and hiking are great exercises when done with safety in mind. What kinds of advice can you give on this topic?

Jogging or running – These are also still winter activities that many people consider vital to their winter training regimen. This is particularly true of triathletes who have long training seasons and often prefer to train in environments that are more challenging than a running track in July.

Shoveling snow – There are right ways and wrong ways to do this, and people who have ever injured their backs or pulled muscles doing it know it’s true. Shoveling snow and other winter outdoor work can be framed as fitness activities and used to create engaging blog content.

Ice skating – This is a great cardio exercise that deserves some blog content from the perspective of outdoor winter fitness. Why not start a blog around ice skating, complete with content about training for activities like figure skating and hockey?

Sledding – This is also a great exercise, particularly if you’re climbing hills and hauling your sled. Again, there are safe and not-so-safe ways to manage this activity. It may be more of a one-off than some of these others, but it’s an interesting topic that can engage your audience long enough to capture their interest in future posts.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing – These are two great activities with a large following of enthusiasts. People from warmer climates actually travel to engage in them, so consider developing blog content and some good destinations for these winter activities.

Home Fitness

The safest option for keeping fit this winter is to come up with a home workout regimen. Blog about exercises people can do on their own. Review home fitness equipment, fitness videos, and popular workout programs.

Encourage the concept of pandemic safety, but don’t be alarmist about it. Know your niche with this one and how to communicate with its members effectively. In other words, don’t scare people into staying home but frame your content in a way that communicates that they can still get good results at home without having to assume the risks associated with the pandemic.
